ALTERED OCTAVOS: A Call to Artists

Loganberry Books

October 3rd-31st , 2013

Loganberry Books is holding an altered book contest called Altered Octavos.  The contest, and coinciding Annex Gallery exhibition, is in celebration of Octavofest in October.

This is a mixed media art contest with the focus being altered books.  An altered book is a book-object transformed from its original form into a personal work of art.  Entries can be as simple as a drawing or text on a page or as complex as a sculpture, but it must be an original piece of art, using or derived from books.

The contest is open to all artists, with a limit of one entry per person.  Sign up will take place the first week of September.  Please be considerate of the size of the artwork; if it is bigger than three feet please contact us.  Set-up will take place Wednesday, October 2nd, with an Opening Reception on Thursday, October 3rd, 6-9pm.  Artwork must be identified by artist, title, and price (all entries must be available for sale with a 20% commission to Loganberry Books).

There will be several awards given: Best of Show by a panel of adjudicated judges ($500), People’s Choice Award decided by the general audience (prize TBA), and several Honorable Mentions (Loganberry Books gift certificates).  Voting will take place throughout the month, with Awards announced during the closing of the show on Thursday, October 31st.

An octavo is a traditional book format that refers to the size of pages used in the printing of early books in which a large sheet of paper or parchment is folded three times to produce eight leaves. Today octavo format books include many regular and rare, as well as standard and beautiful objects.

Octavofest is a book-loving series of events held in October in Cleveland, Ohio since 2009.  Programming includes exhibitions, demonstrations, art museum tours, and lectures at over two dozen partnering organizations.  Participants include book artists, binders, conservators, calligraphers, craftspeople, printers, papermakers, and all kinds of bibliophiles and art aficionados.  See for more information.

Loganberry Books is an independent bookstore on the border of Shaker Heights and Cleveland since 1994.  Featuring new, used and rare books, Loganberry now holds around 100,000 volumes and offers various community gatherings, lectures, book signings, art exhibitions, live music, and special events throughout the year.
