The Altered Book Group presents its 6th annual exhibition this April at Loganberry Books Annex Gallery, 13015 Larchmere Blvd., Shaker Heights, Ohio 44120, 216-795-9800.  Opening Thursday April 5, 6 - 8 pm.  Exhibit continues through April 28.  Hours: 10 am - 6 pm, Monday - Saturday, open Thursdays until 8 pm.
Artists: Cynthia Beeker, Phyllis Brody, Sarah Clague, Gene Epstein, Anne Weissman, and Zena Zipporah.

An altered book is a book-object transformed from its original form into a personal work of art.

For each of these past 5 years, the Altered Book Group has chosen a theme.
This year’s theme is “Identity”. We have explored who we are as individuals and how
our culture affects how we think of ourselves. We looked into the ways our gender has
helped form our outlook and the way we position ourselves in society and the world.
We have analyzed how relationships within our families and social groups influence
our sense of who we are. These thoughts are expressed in this year’s altered books.

The Artists:
We are a group of women who meet monthly to share ideas about making
art with books. We are painters, musicians, writers, fabric artists, potters. We come to
books from all different disciplines and our work is very individual.

  • Cynthia Beeker shows her poetry expertise as she combines lyrical words and images.
  • Phyllis Brody creates with a wide range of media, melding concept, image and text.
  • Sarah Clague, a widely respected ceramist, adds clay and clay wash to her books.
  • Gene Epstein, known for her book sculptures, also uses paint and digital images.
  • Anne Weissman, a fiber artist, melds stitching and images of fibers into her creations.
  • Zena Zipporah plays with the idea of book, juxtaposing word/image to create narrative.
