November—December 2010

Lauren Pacini -- Urban Photography
Annex Gallery
Opening Reception: Thursday, November 4, 6-8pm

~ first Thursdays ~

Lauren Pacini returns to Loganberry Books with selected black and white photographs from three urban-themed collections. The first details "The Death and Rebirth of the Midwest Industrial City," while the second examines the work of "urban artists," whose canvas includes walls, water towers, under-passes, and rock formations. The third is from a collection called "Reflecting on Cleveland."  The exhibit of black and white fine art photography focuses on familiar sights which we drive past daily but which we rarely really see.   Show continues through November 29.

Arielle Eckstut and David Henry Sterry
authors of The Essential Guide to Getting Your Book Published
Monday, November 8, 7pm

The acclaimed team that brought Putting Your Passion Into Print to bookstore shelves has completely updated and expanded their popular publishing how-to with insider advice on e-books, social media, self-publishing and more, creating the ultimate 21st-century, industry-standard guidebook for authors-to-be.

Join the authors for their 15-city tour of Pitchapalooza!  Here’s how it works: Anyone with an idea for a book has the chance to pitch it to a panel of judges, including Eckstut, Sterry and two guest industry insiders. 20 candidates will be selected by a random drawing for the opportunity to give their 1-minute pitch to the panel in the vein of an "American Idol" for the book world. At the end of each Pitchapalooza, the judges come together to pick a winner, and the potential authors come away with concrete advice on how to improve their pitch as well as a greater understanding of the ins and outs of the publishing industry. Free event, free advice, free fun and games. Participation in the game show as a contestant requires purchase of the book (which you’ll want with all its great advice!), and the winner receives a free half hour consultation with Eckstut and Sterry.

Description: Gene's Jazz HotGene's Jazz Hot
Thursday, November 11, 7-9pm
~ second Thursdays ~

These four good friends have been improvising hot jazz for years. Here is consummate musicianship coupled with the excitement of a front porch jam session. Even if you don’t know the words you’ll be singing along and dancing around the room in no time. Vocalist Peggi Cella is a soulful, inventive improviser, who has been singing all her life. Bassist and singer Gene Epstein is a popular Cleveland area string bassist and band leader. Guitarist and singer Seth Rosen has rock-steady rhythm and deliciously colorful harmonies. Clarinetist and singer Bill Kenney is a virtuosic performer with an irrepressible sense of fun and is an eminent historian with several jazz history books currently in print. Together, they are Gene's Jazz Hot, a local favorite with irrepressibly happy tunes.  Free cookies. Donations for the band gratefully accepted.

Gary Peterson: Collecting Henry Miller and Roger Jackson
Thursday, November 18, 7pm

~ third Thursdays ~

At this month's Northern Ohio Bibliophilic Society forum, Mr. Peterson will exhibit some of Henry Miller’s watercolors and signed first editions, including Miller’s exquisite Into the Night Life, a collaboration of art and writing with Bezalel Schatz that was published in 1947. Also being exhibited will be some of Miller’s hand-typed manuscripts. Roger Jackson’s small press in Ann Arbor, Michigan, has produced some of the most collectible books and bibliographies on Miller, Bern Porter, and other important writers. His books are extremely collectible and very difficult to acquire.  Come meet both Peterson and Jackson and learn more about Henry Miller and the world of book collecting.  $3 suggested donation.

Classics Club
Raymond Carver: Collected Stories
Thursday, November 18, 7pm

~ usually fourth Thursdays, but this one is third ~

From the jacket flap: Raymond Carver's spare dramas of loneliness, despair, and troubled relationships breathed new life into the American short story of the 1970s and '80s. In collections such as Will You Please Be Quiet, Please? and What We Talk About When We Talk About Love, Carver wrote with unflinching exactness about men and women enduring lives on the knife-edge of poverty and other deprivations. Beneath his pared-down surfaces run disturbing, violent undercurrents. Suggestive rather than explicit, and seeming all the more powerful for what is left unsaid, Carver's stories were held up as exemplars of a new school in American fiction known as minimalism or "dirty realism," a movement whose wide influence continues to this day. Carver's stories were brilliant in their detachment and use of the oblique, ambiguous gesture, yet there were signs of a different sort of sensibility at work.
