Edible Books Festival
A Call for Entires!
Saturday, April 2nd,  2005

Following last year’s huge success, Loganberry Books and Strong Bindery will again host the Cleveland exhibition of  the Sixth International Edible Book Festival on Saturday, April 2nd,  2005.  From 1 to 3 pm booklovers, bookbinders, cooks, and craftspeople of all ages are invited to view the Edible Book entries, cast their votes, and eat the edible books.

The Sixth International Edible Book Festival will occur throughout the world on April 2nd (always the Saturday closest to April Fool’s Day).  This is the second annual Cleveland participation in the worldwide event.  See the Books2Eat website for more information on the International participants and  Loganberry Books’ website for FAQ's and pictures of last year’s festival

Edible Book entries welcomed!  All entries must be entirely edible and have something to do with books. There is no fee for contest participants, and each participant will be given a special handcrafted miniature book pin by Strong Bindery.  What is an Edible Book?  Exactly that: an artists' book that is edible, made out of food rather than paper and board.  Choose your favorite food (chocolate, cheese, carrots?) and create a book (novel, picture book, biography?).  Be creative, and have fun.

The edible books will be exhibited, judged, and consumed.  Popular vote will determine the winners for the Literary, Binding and Temptation Awards.  Prizes will include thematically chosen books from Loganberry Books.  Entries already include professional bookbinders, local chefs, electricians, bookworms, and young artists.  People of all ages are invited to participate and to register their entry with Loganberry Books (216-795-9800 or harriett@logan.com).

Set-up begins at 11:00am and the exhibition opens to the public for viewing and voting at 1:00 pm.  Awards will be presented at 2:00 pm, with eating of the books immediately following.  The event is free for all to view, but tickets for voting and eating will be $2.

A booksigning with local author Gail Ghetia Bellamy will also be featured this year.  Bellamy's nostalgic Cleveland Food Memories is a treat for Cleveland memories, published by local press Gray and Company (2004, large paperback, 112 pages, lavishly illustraed,  $17.95).

Remember when food was local? Cleveland companies made it, and local people sold it and ran the restaurants where we ate it. Food makes powerful memories. Mention Hough Bakery and see how quickly we Clevelanders start to drool over just the thought of those long-lost white cakes. This book collects the fondest memories of Clevelanders who still ache for treats from the past. There were Frostees in the Higbees basement. Popcorn balls at Euclid Beach. Burgers at Manners or Mawby's. Entertainment-filled nights at Alpine Village. Mustard at old Municipal Stadium . . . and so much more.

Gail Ghetia Bellamy is a Certified Culinary Professional with a Ph.D. in creative writing. Currently the managing editor and food editor of Restaurant Hospitality magazine, she has also written about food for many local and national magazines as well as for America Online¹s Food & Drink Network. She has lectured extensively on food trends and food writing throughout the U.S. and has contributed to several books about food, including Fodor's/Wall Street Journal Guides to Business Travel in the U.S. and Canada and Bergh's International Digest of Gastronomy, Cookery, and Wine. An accomplished poet, she is the author of the book Victual Reality: Food Poems. She is a native Clevelander.

Please come eat some books with us!
