World Vegetarian Awareness Month
October 1-31

For the third consecutive year, Loganberry Books helps celebrate World Vegetarian Month by teaming up with a local restaurant and by offering 10% off all cookbooks.  This year, we are pleased to introduce a brand-new cafe right across the street from us, specializing in Japanese and British cuisine.  Flying Cranes Cafe will have traditional British tea, sandwiches and take-out food, as well as Japanese specialties and dining in their charming new cafe.  In celebration of their opening, Loganberry Books will offer 10% coupons to Flying Cranes, and vice-versa, during the month of October.

Lori Molesky holds the sales record for Annex Gallery exhibitions, so if you missed her premier showing here two years ago, be sure to stop by in October to relish Lori's rich photographs and joyful nature vistas.  Among her nature wonders this time is a series of trees taken through the four seasons- a perfect visual depiction of time.   She's an excellent photographer, and her prints are perfect for holiday gift-giving.  Every time.  Show runs October 4 thru 29.

Rachanee
In Concert

Rachanee is a versatile independent singer/songwriter based in Michigan. Her catchy blend of folk/pop/rock music is quickly gaining attention nationwide at various venues and on college, Christian and AAA radio. "Here with Me" from Rachanee's debut album Ordinary Girl was named Best Contemporary Christian Song for the 2006 Independent Music Awards, and "From Here" placed second in the 2006 Great Lakes Songwriting Contest.  Often found as either a solo acoustic act or part of an acoustic duo, she is comfortable performing in any venue, as she performs regularly at festivals, coffeeshops, and churches all over the country.  Compared to Natalie Merchant and Michelle Branch, her music has a guitar-driven folk/rock feel; her heartfelt lyrics appeal to any audience.  Tickets:  $10

This popular local quartet plays seriously happy, swinging music about town at art openings, benefits and concerts, cafes and clubs, even appearing on Channel 8 Fox TV’s morning show.  Gene's Jazz Hot is also known as Loganberry Books' house band, so they'll liven things up amongst the bookstacks on the second Thursday of both October and November. Their CD Release Party here last August was a huge success, and CDs are still available for purchase ($15 each) and autographing.  The band will play from 6:30 until 9:00pm with one intermission. The bookstore will remain open for browsing. Donations for the band gladly accepted.

Mitzie Verne:  The Emperor Was My Neighbor in Japan

Mitzie Verne will discuss her family and its lifelong work in the world of books and arts, beginning with the well-known Verne Gallery of Japanese Art.  Her brother Bob Levine was the founder of Cleveland’s well loved Publix Book Mart. Her daughter Betsy Franco has written more than 80 children’s books published by Scholastic, Simon & Schuster and Candlewick Press.  Her son Michael wrote Quiet Elegance: Japan Through the Eyes of Nine American Artists published by Tuttle.  And her grandson James Franco is an actor who won the Golden Globe Award for his role as James Dean and has had leading roles in the Spiderman films.  Mitzie herself has published a lovely little book titled The Emperor Was My Neighbor.  Come hear more about this illustrious Cleveland book family.  Sponsored by the Nothern Ohio Bibliophilic Society, $3 suggested donation. 

Cathie Bleck  --  Open Spaces

Local scratchboard artist Cathie Bleck has been recognized throughout the country, with gallery shows in New York, California and hometown Cleveland Heights.  Bleck has been the recipient of many awards including a gold medal from the Society of Illustrators Museum of American Illustration.  A book released last year, Open Spaces, features her fluid and multi-dimensional style of story telling.  This new gallery exhibition will feature new and old works, as well as a book signing.  A talk on November 15th will feature a technical primer on scratchboard and other printing techniques.  Show runs November 1 thru December 3.

Nancy Markham -- Goddess of Highland Acres

A story of hope, love lost and love found, narrated by two women living in different times. Maggie Buchanan finds the courage to change her mundane life after running the estate sale of deceased artist Katherine Konrad. When Maggie stumbles across a box of war memorabilia hidden by Katherine's deceased husband, the door opens to a mystery that sends her across the world.  Nancy Markham has written for pleasure, but after losing her mother in 1999, and her brother in 2000, her writing became more focused.  Nancy is a 1988 graduate of the Cleveland Institute of Art. She is also an award winning essayist and nature photographer.

Cathie Bleck  --  Scratchboard Printing Techniques

The N.O.B.S. Forums Conversations Throughout the Book World features a print maker this month, alongside her Annex Gallery exhibition of scratchboard prints.  Cathie Bleck studied design and painting at the University of Illinois.  Her delicate yet powerful scratchboard carvings appear to dance into spirals which she describes as “the unseen swirl and flow of internal and external spirits that entwine us.”  Cathie Bleck has lectured, conducted workshops and exhibited throughout North and South America and Europe.  Sponsored by the Nothern Ohio Bibliophilic Society, $3 suggested donation.

Nature Center at Shaker Lakes Photography Club

The Photography Club of the Nature Center at Shaker Lakes is an active group of local photographers, some amateur, some professional.  Several members have had solo shows here at the Annex Gallery, but in December the whole club will have a chance to show their work, and to highlight the natural wonders of the Nature Center we all love.  They also have created a 2008 calendar, and it will be for sale along with their photographs.  Show runs December 6 thru 31.
