Gene’s Jazz Hot
is hosting a party in celebration of its first CD release. This popular quartet plays seriously happy, swinging music twice monthly at Cafe Limbo on Larchmere Blvd., performing for art openings, benefits and concerts, and appearing on Channel 8 Fox TV’s morning show.

The CD Release Party, which is free and open to all, will be from 6-8 pm on Thursday, August 17, 2006 at Loganberry Books (13015 Larchmere Blvd., Shaker Heights, Ohio, 216-795-9800). Gene’s Jazz Hot will play selections from the CD between 6:30 and 7:30, and refreshments will be served. CDs will be available for purchase ($15 each) and autographing.

Sometime in 2004 Gene Epstein assembled a small group of jazz musicians to play a benefit, and Gene’s Jazz Hot was born. Though strangers at the start of the gig, they were swinging in a perfect groove before the night was out. This high spirited ensemble plays swing era jazz, parodies of popular (and not sopopular) tunes, and occasionally sings in languages other than English. With well matched musical sensibilities, the band often sounds as one instrument - loose, exciting, a bit crazy.

"'Hot' is the right name for this album - hot musicians that know how to swing, great vocals by the entire band and a vintage sound that will bring a smile to your face."
--Liz Masterson, Swing coordinator; Augusta Heritage Center

"Superb musicianship!"
--Gino Raffaelli, Cleveland Orchestra violinist, emeritus

"Peggi Cella has an amazing vulnerability and humanity to her voice - it is natural and 100% believable."
--Phil Smith, Bassist, Rain Dogs, Kansas City

String bass player and nominal leader Gene Epstein is a popular Cleveland area bassist. In addition to Gene’s Jazz Hot, she performs regularly with George Foley, the John Richmond Swingtet, the Bell Aires, and Crazy Rhythm. Gene is a visual artist and is the band’s graphic designer.

Bill Kenney, clarinetist and vocalist, has several jazz history books currently in print, including the widelly acclaimed Jazz on the River. His bubbling sense of humor combines with his superb musicianship, often causing audiences to erupt in laughter. Bill also plays with pianist George Foley.

Vocalist Peggi Cella became well known in the early 1970s when she sang with Cleveland’s hottest band, Tiny Alice. Not only a superlative jazz and blues artist, Peggi is a composer who has created dozens of pithy, swinging songs. Peggi is again gigging occasionally with Tiny Alice.

Seth Rosen, guitarist and vocalist, is a versatile musician who also plays mandolin, violin, and string bass. His group, The Suspenders, has been a fixture on the club and party scene for many years. Seth teaches blues and swing mandolin each summer at the Augusta Folk and Heritage Festival.

Gene’s Jazz Hot plays a variety of tunes on the CD: It Don’t Mean a Thing, Fly Me to the Moon, Lady Be Good, Summertime, All of Me, Nuages, Sleepytime Down South, My Blue Heaven, Don’t Get Around Much Anymore, Running Wild, Tofu Ain’t Nothin’ but a Curd, Wild Women Don’t Get the Blues, Spring Cleaning, Moscow Nights and A Hundred Years from Today.
