Independent Bookstore Day: Saturday, April 27, 2019

Join over 500 independent bookstores in 49 states for parties, sales, in-store events, and exclusive day-of merchandise.

Cleveland, Ohio. April 9, 2019: Independent Bookstore Day marks its 5th year of celebrating independent bookstores nationwide on April 27th, with literary celebrations, activities, and giveaways at bookstores around the country.

Independent Bookstore Day is sponsored in part by Penguin Random House, Ingram, and The American Booksellers Association. Last year participating bookstores saw an average increase in sales of 200% on Independent Bookstore Day, with some stores up as much as 1000% over their average Saturday sales in April. 2019's IBD Author Ambassador Tayari Jones says, “Indie stores stock books by hand and sell them the same way. They know what we want and need to read because they know us, as people. We are human beings and so are the independent bookstore workers who show up each day and place books in our hands.”

Northeast Ohio area bookstores have joined forces to publicize the event, and the fact that independent bookstores are alive—and thriving. Among other activities, the Heights Bicycle Coalition is hosting a scavenger hunt to various locations mentioned in Celeste Ng's New York Times bestselling novel, Little Fires Everywhere. The hunt will start from Appletree Books at 12pm on 4/27, where participants will pick up their checklist and visit numerous locations referenced in Celeste Ng's novel. The 2-hour-long bike ride will end at Appletree Books where participants with their completed checklists will be entered into a raffle.

To reacquaint Clevelanders with the many different personalities of bookstores in the area, local bookstores have produced a Passport to the area's various and sundry bookstores. IBD Passport participants this year are:
