Guild of Book Workers Exhibition

Loganberry Books Annex Gallery, October 7—31, 2015
Opening Reception: October 7, 6-8 PM

The Guild of Book Workers, a national organization of artisan and hand bookbinders and other hand book crafts, will be holding their annual conference, Standards of Excellence, in Cleveland this October.  While the conference is in town, an exhibition of fine bookbinding will be on display at Loganberry Books in Shaker Heights.

The exhibition started with a word, a concept: Vessel.  The book as vessel inspires beautiful metaphor: a craft for traveling, a container, a holder, a receiver, a transporter.  Across time and culture, the vessel is at the center of many ceremonies and rites of passage. Native American cultures regarded the vessel as a portal to a sacred realm. The book as craft is our vessel to sail the high seas, to hold our dearest memories, and to indicate the pulse of life. Guild of Book Workers members were invited to interpret “vessel” as broadly or as narrowly as they wished, and this exhibition showcases the best results.

Vessel  features approximately 50 works. The Cleveland exhibition will be the first destination on its national tour of at least nine venues across the U.S.  Selected works will include fine and edition bindings, artist’s books, broadsides (letterpress printing, calligraphy, and decorative paper making), and historical binding models. Works have been selected by a jury to ensure that they are of excellent quality.  A catalog will be available for sale.

The exhibition at Loganberry Books Annex Gallery will be up for the month of October, with an opening reception on October 7, 6:00-8:30pm.  A special reception for the Guild of Book Workers will be held on Friday, October 15, 6:00-8:30PM.  Exhibition closes on October 31.  Admission is free, and open to the public during Loganberry Books’ regular hours.
