Loganberry Books announces

ENDPAPERS:  Community Conversations

LOCAL VOICES:  Seminars for Writers

Every second Wednesday, 7PM

Loganberry Books is excited to announce the launch of a new lecture series on the second Wednesday of the month that connects community members with distinguished individuals working in literature, popular culture and building a better Cleveland.  Some are panels, some are interviews, and one session per quarter will be a writing workshop (with modest fee) designed to help local writers hone their craft and reach their audience.  Here’s the line-up so far:

KyleJustinENDPAPERS

The Lure of the Short Story
Kyle Coma-Thompson and Justin Glanville
Wednesday, September 10, 7:00-8:30 pm
~ second Wednesdays ~
What is it about the short story that continually attracts writers to try their best work in this format?  What lucky strike is required for the condensed and succinct form?  Kyle and Justin are both Ohio natives who appreciate the writer’s rarest, hardest, most abbreviated form: the short story.  Far be it from merely a student playground, the short story is the stuff of Pulitzers (John Cheever) and Nobels (Alice Munro).  Come learn more from young writers who still work, read, and revere this smallest of literary masterpieces.  Free.

Local Voices writing seminar

Leslie Yerkes

Wednesday, October 8, 7:00-8:30 pm

~ second Wednesdays ~

Every person has a book in them. What is yours? Navigating the world of publishing. Leslie Yerkes, local author, consultant, speaker, work hard / play hard, mid-life business owner would love to share her passion for books, writing, reading and how to fulfill your dream of writing your own book and getting it published. Leslie has written almost a dozen books and has a few more in her. She has been represented by publishers and tried her hand at self-publishing. She is a founding member and past President of Berrett-Koehler Publisher Authors Co-op, President of Catalyst Consulting Group, and a neighbor to Loganberry Books. Come for good conversation about books. Tickets $10

Perspectives on the Common Core

Emily Ellington, Olivia Geaghan, Megan Whalen Turner

November 12, 7:00-8:30 pm

~ second Wednesdays ~

The Common Core is the new standard in our schools, but what exactly does it mean for educators, librarians, writers, and students?  Three diverse viewpoints come together to talk about the goals, the realities, and the challenges of creating exciting curriculum for elementary students.  Mrs. Emily Ellington is a retired teacher from the Cleveland Public Schools (Harvey Rice) who was part of the beta test program for the Common Core.  Olivia Geaghan is an upper school librarian at a private school (Hathaway Brown), and Megan Whalen Turner is a Newbery-Honor-winning author of young adult novels (The Thief).  Come listen, and participate, in this open discussion.  Free.

Staff Picks Live

December 10, 7:00-8:00 pm

~ second Wednesdays ~

This is your opportunity to come hear what books have kept us excited during 2014, and might make great holiday gifts.  Booksellers are used to listening to Publisher Reps talk about their new and upcoming favorites, but readers are perhaps less familiar with the “speed dating” concept to live, in-person book blurbs.  We will allow each bookseller, and several invited biblio guests, to speak for five minutes, and five minutes ONLY, about one to ten of their most exciting reads of the year.  Stay tuned for the celebrated guest list, and come share the excitement. Free.
