Gene's Jazz Hot
Gene's Jazz Hot Gene’s Jazz Hot
Thursday,
June 11, 7-9pm
~ second Thursdays ~
A variation on an old booksellers joke:  Three guys held winning tickets to the largest lottery jackpot in history. A tabloid news program decided to do a piece on it, and interview the three co-winners. The first guy was a lawyer, and when asked what he intended to do with his winnings, he replied: "I think I'll start a practice that caters to the less fortunate, and take on only clients whose causes I really believe in." The second guy was a doctor, and when asked the same question, replied: "I think I'll open a clinic which offers quality medical care to the less fortunate and homeless, free of charge." The third guy was a jazz guitarist, and when asked what he would do with his new fortune, said: "I think I'll just keep gigging 'til the money runs out."  ** Come enjoy Gene's Jazz Hot, every second Thursday evening (even if I get the date wrong).  Gene's cookies are pretty good, too.  Donations for the band gladly accepted.

Stump the Bookseller  Selection of the month
Stump the Bookseller B684: Boy goes back 100 years & sails with buccaneers
A boy goes into a Nantucket (?) bookstore, - no one is there.  He goes through the store and out the open back door, and steps back 100 years.  He is impressed into service on a buccaneer ship and goes on a journey.  He gets reprimanded by the captain with a whip with a stingray barb on the end, leaving a cut on his cheek.  He gets back to Nantucket, the bookstore, and present times - with a scar still on his cheek.  I would like to find this book for my boy.  Any clue?

nobs-logo-m.jpgReene Alley: McGuffey's Readers -- The Myth and the Reality

Thursday, June 18, 7pm
~ third Thursdays ~
Long before Dick and Jane was McGuffey.  McGuffey's Readers marked a generation of young children, and their worn tan covers can bring an old-timer back to childhood in a flash.  More than nostalgia items, however, McGuffey shaped several generations and the entire field of American education, with at least 120 million copies sold between 1836 and 1960.  Come learn more about the history and impact of these reading primers.  $3 suggested donation.

T.C. Boyle:  The Tortilla Curtain
Thursday,
June 25, 7pm
~ fourth Thursdays ~
Local Author Sarah Willis is leading this new book club featuring great reads that didn't necessarily make the bestsellers list.  The Tortilla Curtain is a wonderful read, full of politics and family and mounting tensions, and creates enough questions to make it a really good discussion book.  Join us as we talk about what makes the book good, why it feels so real, and how the characters both inspire and infuriate you.  Bring your friends and do something new on a Thursday night!

Claire Tomalin:  Jane Austen, A Life
Thursday,
June 25, 7pm
~ fourth Thursdays ~
The
Austeniana Club has decided to tackle some biography on Jane.  Doesn’t matter which biography really, any biography on Jane Austen would be fine.  We’ll each report on our reading, and the various commentaries will enlighten us all the more! (Sure, the recent movie "Becoming Jane" works just as well).
