Loganberry News May 2023

Happy May! Many thanks to everyone who showed up for Independent Bookstore Day and showered us with love. We gave out lots of prizes, played over 50 Wordle games, and consumed an entire sheet cake. Good times!

We also made our debut on TikTok last week, with a stellar interpretation of the Wes Anderson parody trend (if I do say so myself). Congratulations to staffers Cat and Elisabeth for their creative moxie, and follow us on social media for more!

Looking ahead, we celebrate Children’s Book Week, host many book signings and book discussion groups, and gear up for the first Sidewalk Sale of the year! It must be spring. Hooray for spring!

Lenny Pinna: A Face from Uranus: Correspondence Between Tedd Burr and Henry Bellamann, 1943-1945
Thursday, May 25, 6:30pm
~in-person~
Nineteen year old Tedd Burr was in private turmoil over his gender identity in 1943. After receiving a draft notice, Tedd reaches out in desperation to Henry Bellamann, author of the best-selling 1940 novel Kings Row, for advice. Tedd imagines that the author who wrote sympathetically in his novel about a boy who was "too pretty for a boy" might be able to help him in some way. Henry responds, initiating a warm correspondence that deepens and lasts until Henry's death in 1945. A Face from Uranus publishes for the first time all the letters from Tedd and Henry's correspondence.

The editor of this collection, Lenny Pinna, will share the twenty-three year journey of his involvement with the original Burr and Bellamann letters, beginning with a clip from the docudrama he produced and directed in 2000, Letters to Uranus: The Hidden Life of Tedd Burr. Lenny will also perform a dramatic scene from his proposed Limited TV Series, In the Name of Jamie Wakefield, which is inspired by the Burr/Bellamann letters.

Children's Book Week

May 1-7, 2023
~annual~
Kicking off Children’s Book Week this year is a SALE on children’s books - More details below! Children’s Book Week at Loganberry also features some self-directed activities (coloring, puzzles, worksheets) for in-store and to take home.

We will also mark the occasion by fundraising for Cleveland Kids’ Book Bank. You may know KBB as a resource that distributes donated books to kids, but used books don’t always match new kids! The Books Like Me campaign specifically seeks donations of new children’s books with Black and Brown characters, written and illustrated by BIPOC creators, relevant to ethnically, religiously, and economically diverse (and marginalized) audiences. We'll have selected suggestions (though you can of course browse our whole collection) available to purchase at 20% off for donation. Cash donations are also accepted. The Books Like Me campaign runs all month long, so help us assemble a worthy collection of books for Cleveland kids!

Harriett recommends: Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin: "Gabrielle Zevin has written 10+ novels for adults and young adults, but Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow is her first that features a character of Jewish and Korean heritage like herself. This is a novel of friendship, unrequited love, and the creative mind. The obsessive, driven quality of these game designers could be describing any creative art, and made the gaming world that much more accessible to me. But the best part is the saga of a decades-long friendship that will both cheer you and break your heart."

9780735269958

Devon recommends: Iron Widow by Xiran Jay Zhao: "This action-packed young adult science fiction novel blends Chinese history throughout the story. It addresses many issues, including gendered roles and expectations, family and friendship dynamics, and power struggles. I highly recommend this series to mecha-anime and manga fans, as well as lovers of history and science fiction in general."

9781476714820

Elisabeth recommends Snow Hunters by Paul Yoon "This is a little novel I'd been aware of for years as a darling of critics and writers alike, but never actually picked up til last year. WOW, what was I waiting for? A beautiful, near perfect little novella if ever there was one, spare and deep."

9781951836146

Sarah recommends Beautiful Day! Petite Poems for All Seasons words by Rodoula Pappa, art by Seng Soun Ratanavanh: "This is stunning, magnificent, beautiful, and everything a picture book for children (and adults) is meant to be. I will be giving this book as a present to parents, grandparents, and myself!"

*Freddy recommends Potiki by Patricia Grace:* Maori author Patricia Grace began writing for Maori children so they might see their own lives reflected in stories. Her short stories led to novels of which Potiki is her most well known. It is a (familiar) story of ancestral lands being purchased by land developers and the rebellious efforts of a small Maori community in opposition. Woven into the novel are pieces of the Maori rich culture, mythology and language outlining the cultural differences that exist. Told through the eyes of a few narrators, Potiki gives the reader glimpses of Maori life still very much alive.

9780063021426

Toni recommends Babel by RF Kuang: "My favorite book that I read in 2022! I couldn't stop reading it, and I wish I could read it for the first time again. By turns academic thriller, alternative history, sci-fi, and post-colonial critique - with linguistics! So much fun and so smart, both. It's amazing that Kuange can pack it all in and make it work -- and wow does she!!!"

51S7l8wdLfL

Wendy recommends How High We Go In the Dark by Sequoia Nagamatsu: "In 2030, high in the the Arctic Circle, an ancient virus is unleashed from the ice when a perfectly preserved body is excavated. Through a series of intertwined stories, Nagamatsu reveals the myriad ways that the Arctic Plague changes life on Earth over the course of centuries. This inventive book will have readers questioning the very meaning of humanity while also marveling at the resiliency of the human spirit over inconceivable stretches of time."
