Loganberry News March 2021

Happy Women's History Month!

Marching into Women’s History Month, we have a series of Zoom author events exploring feminism, professionalism and entrepreneurship, hereditary health concerns, and women of the Bible (find all their books here). We’re also resurrecting Broadsides & Ephemera (our popular poetry readings), starting a new book club for teens, and continuing our Preschool Storytime. Featured in our front windows are women explorers and travelers, in the Nonfiction room we've got international birding field guides, and in the Annex Gallery, photography by Jeneen Hobby. We're all ready for spring. (We even have a new part-time cat, Alice.) Thanks for cheering us along.

Getman's 24-Hour Virtual Book Fair

March 3-March 4, 2021, 12pm-12pm ET
~quarterly, online~
Join Loganberry Books and other collectible and rare booksellers from around the world for a virtual book fair. Don't hesitate - this fair lasts only 24 hours!

For this month’s fair, we have chosen an interesting array of books that are by women authors or focus on aspects of women’s history. Titles range from inspirational (Helen Keller’s Let Us Have Faith) to aspirational (The Complete Jam Cupboard), and from entertaining (Gloria Steinem’s Beach Book, complete with a dust jacket which unfolds to become sun reflector) to frightening (Frankenstein with woodcuts by Lynd Ward). You can browse our offerings and others from noon on March 3 to noon on March 4 at Getman's Fair.

Jeneen Hobby: Photographs
March 7-31, 2021
~monthly exhibition~
We're thrilled to host a new show featuring work by Jeneen Hobby in the Annex Gallery, on display and for sale through the month of March.

Jeneen Hobby's vocation began at Ohio University, where she practiced black and white photography and experimented in the darkroom. She now focuses on color, using primarily Nikon equipment, and a light hand in post-processing. In this way she considers herself a descendant of the High Modernist movement of mid-20th century photography, documenting the world in its hard realism, highlighting deep contrast, emotion, surprise, and critical thinking inherent in an image that speaks for itself.

*Harriett is (re-)reading: Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston:* "Having recently adopted a young cat I named Zora, I thought it was time to revisit this Black feminist classic from the Harlem Renaissance. I chose the audiobook read by the masterful Ruby Dee on Libro.fm and delighted in the characterizations of her voice and the lilting narrative passages. Protagonist Janie Crawford comes of age with her Nanny in northern Florida and marries three times before finding strength in her identity and voice. A hurricane changes her fortunes, but reveals the strength of her love and tenacity. Whether you've read this classic or not, I highly recommend this great audiobook recording with Ruby Dee."

Miesha is reading: She Said by Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey "This is a perfect nonfiction read for anyone who loves seeing how a groundbreaking investigative journalism story unfolds. The journalists had to build a coalition of women willing to publicly accuse Harvey Weinstein together. They uncovered the wildly restrictive settlement agreements past victims signed and fought in a climate of mistrust in the media. The book is inspirational about the tenacity of the two journalists and the women's stories they uncovered.

*Wendy is reading Afterland by Lauren Beukes:* "After a pandemic kills most of the men, a mother goes on the run with her pre-teen son disguised as her daughter. Told in chapters with alternating points of view, the book is an eye-opening and tense look at a world run by women seeking to get reproductive power by rounding up the remaining males."

Elisabeth is reading The Lost Pianos of Siberia by Sophy Roberts: "I always love to seek out unusual travelogues by women, and am currently enthralled Sophy Roberts' unusual narrative--a really unique travelogue about the liminal space of Siberia that is both European and Asiatic and has a surprising obsession with pianos!"

*Miranda is reading: Warcross by Marie Lu* "I'm really looking forward to discussing this page-turning adventure with our new Not YA Average Teen Book Club later this month. It focuses on the peril of young women in male-dominated realms--in this case, computer hacking. Emika Chen is an unforgettable heroine.

Julie is reading: At the Edge of the Haight by Katherine Seligman: "This absolutely gripping novel follows the plight of a young homeless woman after she witnesses the murder of a stranger and his parents accost her to try to find out more about their homeless son's life."

9781538732182

*Freddy is reading: Parable of the Sower by Octavia Butler*: "I've known of Octavia Butler for years now but have just begun my first book of hers, Parable of the Sower. Even though written in 1993 and set in the future time of 2025, it already speaks to the world we are living in now, almost identically. Through all this despair, I am told there is hope to be found."
