New Year 2021

So far, the new year isn’t instantly calmer or better, but these things are gradual, right? Meanwhile, we’re getting better at virtual events, our podcast has some interesting interviews in the works, our favorite children’s book awards are coming up, and there are always new books (both new-new, as well as used & collectible!). We miss you, but thank goodness we have books. What are you reading these days? (That’s not a rhetorical question, we would love to post your reviews on our blog!). Read on.

*Harriett is reading: Crossings by Alex Landragin:* This mystery/thriller/time travel/transmigration saga, with cameo appearances by Charles Baudelaire, a bookbinder, Coco Chanel, and an 18th-century Polynesian Islander, is a clever puzzle box of a novel (or 3 stories, depending on whom you believe). Bonus, you can read it in alternate orders!

King Stand cover

*Miesha is reading: The Stand by Stephen King (extended edition)*: I've been reading the extended edition of The Stand to tie in with watching the series based on the book airing on CBS All Access. (Pictured and linked for sale here is a first edition of the complete, uncut,1,200 page version of The Stand!)

Wendy is reading A Children's Bible by Lydia Millet I'm enjoying this post-disaster survival story: climate change cautionary tale with a Lord of the Flies feel.

61Dh7Ze-N7L

Elisabeth is reading Moominland Midwinter: I never got to read these classic children's books as a child, but how much more of a treat to discover their zany wisdom now. This book in particular speaks deeply to how I've been feeling about living through pandemic winter.

9781984842138

*Miranda is reading: The Cousins by Karen M. McManus* My first read of 2021 did not disappoint! This YA thriller follows three cousins as they uncover family secrets on their grandmother's vacation island.

91HjecLPP3L

Freddy is reading: Doomsday Book by Connie Willis: This scifi time-travel classic is set in a pandemic moment frighteningly like our own. It shows the power of an old tale with new thoughts to inform our current situation.

41drD0JKzXL. SX321 BO1 204 203 200

Sarah is reading: Let Him Go by Larry Watson: Watson is a brilliant writer, and so good with characters and dialogue and creating tension. It starts in North Dakota in 1951, and George and Margaret are trying to find their grandson, who has been taken by their son's widow and her new husband.

91tBb2V3-fL

Julie is reading: How to Do Nothing by Jenny Odell: A great read on the virtues of developing the mind beyond the typical shallow attention state that online advertisers and other standard-bearers of western civilization take advantage of!

51hlQ5-V12L

*Lorraine is reading: The King of Confidence by Miles Harvey*: This is the fascinating true story of about James Jesse Strang who declared himself the Mormon KING (!!!) of Beaver Island --in Lake Michigan, up toward the Straits-- in the 1840s.This story is NUTS, he's a con man with 100s of followers, and it's well written and entertaining.
