Books Make the Perfect Gifts

These are a few of our favorite books...

We're able to offer more titles than ever before for easy online purchase via our webstore and Bookshop.org, we wanted to share a few titles that we booksellers have personally read and think make perfect gifts! You find these books in-store also (along with booksellers eager to recommend others for your particular needs!) but also over the phone or by clicking the links for mailing or curbside pickup. We'd also love to know what you've been reading and hope to share with loved ones this coming chilly season.

Printers, warehouses, and shipping are running more slowly than usual due to COVID precautions, so if you know you're looking for a particular book in time for the holidays, please order ASAP to avoid disappointment!

We're so thankful for all your support past, present, and future!

the city we became cover

*Harriett recommends: The City We Became by Maggie O'Farrell*: "Master scifi and fantasy writer N.K. Jemisin is back with the first installment in a thrilling and beautifully written new series--this one imagining if each borough of New York City actually had a spirit of its own."

Wendy recommends The Arrest by Jonathan Lethem "In a post-apocalyptic world where everything we take for granted (cars, computers, electricity) has stopped working, Journeyman has found a mostly good life in a community centered around the organic farm run by his sister. Their lives are disrupted when a figure from their past arrives from the other side of the country in a fantastical vehicle. His arrival threatens the community, and Journeyman must rise to the occasion."

Elisabeth recommends In the Half Room by Carson Ellis: I love each and every one of Caldecott Honor-winning illustrator Carson Ellis's books, but this new one is especially whimsical. Young readers (and older ones!) will find hours of surreal wonder in the world of this book where half birthdays are just the beginning...

Miranda recommends: Text Me When You Get Home by Maureen Johnson This ode to female friendship is the perfect gift for your best friend, squad, or book club!

Freddy recommends: Braiding Sweetgrass: Special Illustrated Edition by Robin Wall Kimmerer: Already becoming a classic, this new deluxe edition is a wonderful special gift for someone. With a new introduction, 5 illustrations and a gorgeous binding, Robin Wall Kimmerer weaves science, spirituality, indigenous wisdom, and a lesson in botany that every human needs to read.

9781487007799

Sarah recommends: The Lost Spells by Robert Macfarlane and Jackie Morris: This new collection from beloved author Robert Macfarlane and illustrator Jackie Morris is absolutely gorgeous, filled with poems and illustrations of nature’s beauty. Each and every page is a gem. Just pick it up, open it, and let your heart sigh.

9780500651513

Leigh Recommends: _Big Book of Birds by Yuval Zommer: "Zommer’s book is like the younger naturalist’s version of
David Allen Sibley’s What It’s Like to Be a Bird. It is full of gorgeous illustrations and facts about the lives and habits of birds. Perfect for any budding nature lover in your family; purchase alone or as a companion to the Sibley."

Confessions-of-a-Bookseller 72

Brenda recommends: Confessions of a Bookseller by Shaun Blythel: "Have you ever dreamed of owning your own bookshop? Then this book is for you! Shaun Blythell tells all in his daily musings on activities in his used-books shop in Scotland. Buying, selling, promoting and above all, staffing, fill his pages with amusing anecdotes that all ring true to the trade. This book will leave you laughing, but maybe not quite so eager to try it for yourself."

9781631498770

John Recommends: Trust by Pete Buttegieg: In his second book, Pete Buttigieg, the former presidential candidate and former mayor of South Bend, Indiana, follows up on his insightful memoir Shortest Way Home with a book focused on the deep conflicts that currently divide our nations. The element of trust: a key ingredient of a democratic society – and the author builds a compelling case for rebuilding it in our country. A thoughtful book and a perfect gift!

9781984815682

Julie is reading: Fighting Words by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley: This is an intense but incredibly tasteful, well-written novel for middle grade readers, dealing with topics like sexual abuse, consent, mental illness, poverty, bullying and addiction. It deals with these subjects in a compassionate, but realistic way.
