Fall Onward and Upward

Just when you think the world is ending, it only changes into something new. I’ve been rearing caterpillars all summer: 2 rounds of monarchs, and almost a dozen of the spectacular Spicebush Swallowtail. My neighbors have enjoyed the progress, and I feel guilty not bringing the show to Loganberry. So, I’m going to bring some of these Spicebush babies into the shop so you can enjoy them too. Come soon though, because they’re getting ready to pupate (2 down, 2 in process, 8 to go!). I wish all your seasonal and educational metamorphoses to be as glorious as these, even if you don’t know what’s coming next. Happy fall, and happy new beginnings!

PS: Want to learn more about butterflies, or just enjoy their beauty? Gardening For Butterflies by The Xerxes Society and Life Cycles of Butterflies by Judy Burris are perfect companions, one focused on the plants to attract butterflies, and one to learn more about the life cycle of various common butterflies. Together, they will help you create a butterfly oasis at home and, and to encourage young lepidopterists, too! It's not just fun and educational, it's downright spiritual and phenomenal!

Elisabeth is reading Vesper Flights by Helen Macdonald: As soon as I read Helen Macdonald's genre-bending memoir H Is for Hawk several years ago, it became one of the Books of My Life, beloved and worldview altering. I'm so thrilled her new collection of nature (and life) essays is out now. And we've got signed copies!

Harriett is reading Hamnet by Maggie O'Farrell: "It’s a beautiful tale of star-crossed lovers, wild medicine women, medieval class and inequalities, sibling loyalty, schooling, and ... the bubonic plague."

Wendy is reading The Arrest by Jonathan Lethem (out 11/10; (click here to preorder!): "In a post-apocalyptic world where everything we take for granted (cars, computers, electricity) has stopped working, Journeyman has found a mostly good life in a community centered around the organic farm run by his sister. Their lives are disrupted when a figure from their past arrives from the other side of the country in a fantastical vehicle. His arrival threatens the community, and Journeyman must rise to the occasion."

Julie is reading My Life as an Ice Cream Sandwich by Ibi Zoboi: "This brilliant middle grade novel set in mid 1980s Harlem, follows a very unusually imaginative little girl whose world is upended when she moves from Alabama to the big city.

Lorraine is reading The Joy of Cooking by Irma Rombauer : Cookbooks are my go-to comfort read. Over the weekend I needed to pull out the heavy hitter: The Joy of Cooking. This book never disappoints. The "Know Your Ingredients" section is phenomenal, and the 1981 edition has the notorious wild game section--not for the faint of heart or vegetarian--but oddly satisfying. Can't follow a narrative right now? Read some recipes. "

Miesha is reading Heaven, My Home by Attica Locke: An engaging and nail-biting literary mystery from an Edgar-Award winning author. Texas Ranger Darren Matthews must cover up his own complicity in a murder while solving another. Locke beautifully describes the landscape of the setting, a real Louisiana-style steamboat town on the Texas border.

9780525655985

Sarah is reading: Memoirs and Misinformation by Jim Carey, (yes, that Jim Carey): "This novel (not memoir!) is a wild rollercoaster ride that takes us through Hollywood to—well I don’t want to spoil the ride, but you will never guess where you will end up. It’s fun, bizarre, outlandish, and not what I was expecting, but that is exactly what I loved about it. "
