Re-inventing Summer

The new normal is not normal, but there's no going back to "the way things were." Both for good and for bad, our trifecta of pandemic, economic collapse, and social upheaval will leave lasting change in our habits, pastimes, and expectations. As we negotiate our way to a better society, we hope you find new voices and perspectives to help guide and entertain you (have you seen the current Indie Bestsellers list?). Check out our new podcast, Lines from Loganberry, and consider ordering online for curbside pickup, shipping, or downloading your new reads. Keep your quirky spirit alive and fresh, we all need to cultivate our kindness and eccentricities while learning more about our shared humanity. That's what I call Independents Day.

PS: Check out a special announcement later in this email about next month, aka, Black Future Month!

OPEN on Independence Day

Saturday, July 4, 2020
Unusually for us, we will be OPEN this year on the 4th of July. It’s an unusual year. We figure most mass events are canceled, and even family picnics may be called off. We’re just a small retail outfit, and we’re limited to 25 customers (wearing masks) at a time, but who doesn’t enjoy a quiet, calm day at the bookstore? We’re here for you.

Later in the month, we'll host author Beth Armstrong, author of Voices from the Ape House.

Black Future Month

Illuminating Black Authors
Saturday, August 1-August 31, 2020

We've decided to answer the question author NK Jemisin rhetorically asks in the title of her story collection How Long Til Black Future Month? by declaring August as Black Future Month. We encourage everyone to find ways to celebrate Black Future Month, exactly half a year from Black History Month: a time to imagine and equip ourselves to work for a future that honors and celebrates all Black lives and work. This year, we will participate in a performance art shelving project called Illuminating Black Authors, akin to our Illustrating the Gender Gap project of March 2017. In the LitArts room, we will push fiction books written by non-Black people to the back of the shelf, and highlight books written by Black* authors face-out in front.

Our objective is to highlight works written by Black writers and to guide your reading discovery to voices from the African diaspora and Africa (not just to showcase the disparity; we know it's enormous). Customers are welcome to join us in the project, as we research what we can and make the shelving shift on Saturday, August 1st. One hour of your time will earn you $10 in Loganberry book credit! The exhibition will remain in place through the month of August, and all books will of course be available for browsing and for sale.

*We're working within the knowledge that race (like gender) is a social construct with profoundly real affects on human lives. For the purposes of this project, we'll highlight the work of authors who self-define as Black or African/of African descent.

Elisabeth is reading: The Confessions of Frannie Langton by Sara Collins: "Full disclosure: I read and LOVED Frannie when she first published last spring, but I adore this book so much I'm so excited to finally share with you in paperback. Think Toni Morrison meets Sarah Waters: gothic murder mystery meets love story meets literary historical fiction about a formerly enslaved Jamaican woman who lands on English soil in the early 19th century."

Lorraine is reading Afterlife by Julia Alvarez: "Alvarez' first adult novel in 14 years--a short, powerful narrative of a retired professor whose family life is suddenly upended--is helping me break out of a bit of a reading slump--she's a real storyteller."
