Bookstores Against Borders CLE: Saturday, July 20, 2019

Northeast Ohio bookstores join more than 60 bookstores nationwide to raise funds for refugee legal aid

Cleveland, Ohio. July, 11 2019: Bookstores Against Borders, a fundraising effort begun July 5, 2019 by A Room of One's Own Bookstore in Madison, WI, aims to take between 5%-20% of bookstore sales and donate to RAICES, a nonprofit providing legal aid and other resources to refugees imprisoned at the US-Mexico Border. The campaign has been joined by bookstores nationwide and Cleveland area bookstores Loganberry Books, Mac's Backs, Visible Voice, and The Learnéd Owl have announced their own participation on Saturday, July 20, 2019. *All bookstores have pledged to donate 10% of sales on that day to RAICES via the Bookstores Against Borders fundraising platform.*

Bookstores nationwide have already raised more than $75,000 for RAICES, and Loganberry, Mac's Backs, Visible Voice, and The Learnéd Owl are eager to help reach the goal of $100,000 by the end of July. Loganberry Books Owner Harriett Logan says, "As small business owners, we can make a stand for justice--and we should." Visible Voice Owner Dave Ferrante says "We value diverse voices and perspectives, and the immigration policies initiated by this administration run counter to the ideals of our country." Suzanne DeGaetano, co-owner of Mac's Back's. adds that "Part of our mission as booksellers is to raise awareness about national and global issues and injustices. This campaign with our bookselling colleagues to support separated and detained families at our border is vital and necessary." " Kate Schlademan, Owner of The Learnéd Owl, hopes the event will encourage "everyone to take a moment to expand their minds and make the world a better place." Readers and friends of all four bookstores are encouraged to show up in-store on July 20 to make a purchase in support of the community their local bookstores foster and in support of the justice that RAICES is working to create for people currently being detained by the US government. Those who aren't able to make it into storefront locations can still donate via the Bookstores Against Borders fundraising page and share news about the event via the #bookstoresagainstbordersCLE hashtag.
