Loganberry News for November 2018

Gotta go! Gotta go! Gotta go to Mexico!

That's the refrain from one of my favorite children's books (by Sam Swope & Sue Riddle) about the migration of monarch butterflies. It both captures the joy and urgency of the end of the year, and coincides perfectly and miraculously with Dia de Muertos. Is it any wonder that butterflies are believed to connect us to dead souls? The beauty of it, and the synchronicity of our Halloween and All Saint's Day, is a kind of international music that the migrating monarchs understand. This year's migrants officially crossed the border on October 20, and are expected to arrive in Angangueo, Michoacan on November 1, right on schedule.

Here at Loganberry Books, we are preparing for our annual Haunted Bookshop tours and for Holiday Stroll later in the month. We are ready for your little ghosts and ghouls, and thankful that a spooky fright can still be good fun. Keep your eyes open for monarchs.

PS: Thanks to Cleveland Magazine for naming us in their Best of 2018 Editor's Picks!

Vladimir Nabakov: Lolita
Wednesday, November 28, 2018, 7pm
~fourth Wednesdays~
Awe and exhiliration--along with heartbreak and mordant wit--abound in Lolita, Nabokov's most famous and controversial novel, which tells the story of the aging Humbert Humbert's obsessive, devouring, and doomed passion for the young girl Dolores Haze. Lolita is also the story of a hypercivilized European colliding with the cheerful barbarism of postwar America. Most of all, it is a meditation on love--love as outrage and hallucination, madness and transformation. Join us for a discussion of this difficult and singular classic with your host, author and educator Susan Petrone.

Martin Hauserman:The Man Who Saved Cleveland's History
Wednesday, November 28, 2018, 7:00pm
When a detention center in Warrensville was being torn down in 2000, it was discovered that it held numerous boxes of stored records, many original blueprints from Cleveland building projects, that would have been destroyed as well. The City of Cleveland’s Archivist, Martin Hauserman, recovered the documents and came to be known as “the man who saved Cleveland’s history”. The archives hold a treasure trove of documents (the oldest dates to 1803): from city blueprints to curious doodles, the collection is open to the public. Join Martin Hauserman and local writer Kelly Ferjutz for a NOBS presentation to share this exciting piece of local history.
