Lit Cleveland Workshop

D.M. Pulley and Sam Thomas: Turning History into Fiction
Saturday, September 10, 2016, 10:00AM
~ writing workshop ~
The untold stories lurking inside each old building and dusty family album are the things that drive D.M. Pulley to write novels. In this craft talk and workshop, Pulley will discuss the true-life inspirations for her two historical mysteries, The Dead Key and The Buried Book, as well as her third novel still in development. She'll describe the conventional and unconventional research methods she used to make the historical time periods in each of her stories come to life and the high anxiety of walking the line between fact and fiction.
While D.M. Pulley draws her inspiration from historical buildings and artifacts, Sam Thomas is inspired by the people he meets during his research. Whether it is a midwife in seventeenth century England, an Englishwoman captured and adopted by Native Americans, or a Bermudan slave brought to Salem, Sam begins with real historical figures and builds a world around them. Sam will discuss his research and writing process, and — like D.M. — examine the territory between fact and fiction and how best to negotiate such treacherous terrain.
Register with Lit Cleveland.
