Salutations!

Cleveland is on a winning streak, and we are proud to be part of the celebration! We’re getting ready for Author Alley as we speak, with a great line-up of homegrown talent.  As we prepare for the Republican National Convention to come to town, we’ll host a workshop about the election process for children, a book discussion on one of the best political novels ever written, and a book signing celebrating a major recent Supreme Court decision. Shakespeare’s First Folio comes to town, and –what?— there’s an 8th Harry Potter book to celebrate, complete with midnight release party.  Read on!

Also, it’s membership drive for Literary Cleveland, a 1-year-old non-profit organization in town that is bringing many writing workshops, author talks, and craft seminars into our reach.  It’s a great organization, and I encourage you to join.  You’ll note that Loganberry has hosted several workshops in the past months, and we have another one coming up on July 12 (see below).  Their signature event, the Cleveland Inkubator, is coming up on July 30th

Chris Bradlee & Judith Rawson: Cleveland Classics
Wednesday, July 6, 2016, 6:00PM
~ first Wednesdays ~
Photography allows us to celebrate Cleveland as one of America’s classic, industrial cities. Cleveland has endless visual interest, especially if we pause to enjoy the colorful rust of our heritage; the graphic drama of bridges, smokestacks and historic neighborhoods; the beautiful public spaces, including our waterfront; and now the young shoots of the city’s resurgence. Judy Rawson served as Mayor of Shaker Heights for two terms, where she was a strong advocate for cities. Judy’s images of the Flats hang in the Downtown Westin. Chris Bradlee’s images combine reality with whimsical fantasy.

Poets Should Not Ask for Permission
Tuesday, July 12, 2016, 7:00PM

~ one time only ~
Sometimes the well-worn advice to “write what you know” can induce writer’s block. After all, who isn’t occasionally bored with who they are and where they come from? We’ll explore how telling lies in poems can liberate us as writers — and make our work more emotionally honest. We’ll discover what Pablo Picasso meant when he said, “Art is the lie that enables us to realize the truth.” Join Elizabeth Onusko to discuss the "nature of truth" and explore how telling lies in poems can be liberating as an artist. Attendees are invited to bring a draft of a poem to work on. Register with Lit Cleveland.

Book Signing
Jim Obergefell: Love Wins
Monday, July 18, 2016, 7:00PM
~ special event ~

The fascinating and very moving story of the lovers, lawyers, judges and activists behind the groundbreaking Supreme Court case that led to one of the most important, national civil rights victories in decades—the legalization of same-sex marriage. In June 2015, the Supreme Court made same-sex marriage the law in all fifty states in a decision as groundbreaking as Roe v Wade and Brown v Board of Education. Through insider accounts and access to key players, this definitive account reveals the dramatic and previously unreported events behind Obergefell v Hodges and the lives at its center. This is a story of law and love—and a promise made to a dying man who wanted to know how he would be remembered.
Twenty years ago, Jim Obergefell and John Arthur fell in love in Cincinnati, Ohio, a place where gays were routinely picked up by police and fired from their jobs. In 2013, the Supreme Court ruled that the federal government had to provide married gay couples all the benefits offered to straight couples. Jim and John—who was dying from ALS—flew to Maryland, where same-sex marriage was legal. But back home, Ohio refused to recognize their union, or even list Jim's name on John's death certificate. Then they met Al Gerhardstein, a courageous attorney who had spent nearly three decades advocating for civil rights and who now saw an opening for the cause that few others had before him.
This forceful and deeply affecting narrative—Part Erin Brockovich, part Milk, part Still Alice—chronicles how this grieving man and his lawyer, against overwhelming odds, introduced the most important gay rights case in U.S. history. Love Wins: The Lovers and Lawyers Who Fought the Landmark Case for Marriage Equality by Debbie Cenziper and Jim Obergefell is an urgent and unforgettable account that will inspire readers for many years to come. Join us for a book signing with Jim Obergefell. Co-sponsored by Equality Ohio.

Wednesday, July 27, 2016, 7:00PM
~ fourth Wednesdays ~

We’ll read one middle grade novel by a popular local author who may break through to a new national level with her latest novel, and two picture books that attack the format in very different ways.  Will any get that Caldecott/Newbery buzz?  We’re hoping so.
Every Single Second: From acclaimed author Tricia Springstubb comes a poignant and topical middle grade novel about the effects of an accidental shooting on family, friendship, and community. Perfect for fans of Jennifer L. Holm and Rita Williams-Garcia.
Jazz Day: Roxane Orgill and Francis Vallejo help us explore what happens when you invite as many jazz musicians as you can to pose for a photo in 1950s Harlem? Playful verse and glorious artwork capture an iconic moment for American jazz.

Some Birds: Swooping and squawking, flapping and fluttering, there are many different kinds of birds in the world, all with their own special traits and abilities. Some Birds celebrates the colors and shapes of beaks and feathers with a rollicking, rhyming text and intricate design. Matt Spink's lively illustrations with a mod, retro feel are full of style and mesmerizing detail.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child Parts I and II
Saturday, July 30, 2016, 11:00PM
~ once in a lifetime ~

It was always difficult being Harry Potter and it isn’t much easier now that he is an overworked employee of the Ministry of Magic, a husband and father of three school-age children. While Harry grapples with a past that refuses to stay where it belongs, his youngest son Albus must struggle with the weight of a family legacy he never wanted. As past and present fuse ominously, both father and son learn the uncomfortable truth: sometimes, darkness comes from unexpected places.
Based on an original new story by J.K. Rowling, Jack Thorne and John Tiffany, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is a new play by Jack Thorne. It is the eighth story in the Harry Potter series and the first official Harry Potter story to be presented on stage. The book will be officially released on July 30th at midnight, and we will celebrate in traditional butterbeer style. Reservations appreciated, and costumes encouraged.

Tim Herron: Landscapes on Location
Wednesday, August 3, 2016, 6:00PM
~ first Wednesdays ~

With little art background in high school, Tim had his first serious art class at Akron University, and continued at Cooper School of Art and CIA. Over the past two years he has concentrated on landscapes done on location. Although painting from a photo would allow more technical exactitude, it would not show the struggle and process of creating an original piece of art with Tim’s looser, creative style. Some of the paintings featured include a large portrait of Mac's Back's, Sokolowski's University Inn and Lilly's Chocolates. Annex Gallery exhibition opens August 3rd and closes on September 4th, 2016.

Thanks for reading,

Harriett
