Salutations!

I do hope you had a good Hanukkah, Solstice and Christmas (we did, and we thank you).  As we wind down from the frenzy of the holiday season, you might delight in our special gathering with Tibetan Monks this Wednesday evening.  It seems a good bookend to the end of the holidays and of the year.  I hope 2016 brings you more time for reading, more time for music, and more time to hone your craft.  We have a couple events that might fit into those resolutions.  Happy New Year!

Post-Holiday Sale

Otis’ Old Curiosity Shop

Tibetan Monks: On Mindfulness
Wednesday, December 30, 2015, 7:00PM
~ special event ~
Loganberry Books is delighted to host the Cleveland visit of the Buddhist monks of the Labrang Tashi Kyil Monastery.  Following the destruction of the original Labrang Tashi Kyil Monastery in Amdo, Tibet, Venerable Gunthang Tsultrim and other exiled monks rebuilt their monastery in Dehra Dun, India in1967.  To the present day, the chanting styles, rituals, practices, and self initiations are preserved just as they were in Mejung Thosamling College in Labrang Tashi Kyil in Amdo. In addition to Dharma studies, the monastery offers classes in Tibetan grammar and English.  Please join us for an evening of learning and laughing, and a discussion on Mindfulness.  Appreciated Donation: $15.  To learn more about the monks, their monastery, and fundraising tour, please visit their website.

Book Signing

Korby Lenker: Medium Hero
Wednesday, January 13, 2016, 7:00PM
~ special event ~
Korby Lenker will be playing his music and reading from his new book, Medium Hero. Korby Lenker’s first book features twenty-seven stories culled from his fifteen years as a solo touring indie artist. The stories are as colorful as his titles suggest — “Rat’s Dude”, “Manboy and the Mafia Table”, “Catlady” — and flourish under his descriptive, empathetic pen. From a romantic encounter turned family crisis, to a humorous eulogy for his recently deceased piano teacher, to an unlikely visit with a convicted felon in a California desert, he has distilled an unusual life into a few potent vignettes you will read more than once. Korby is in love with the world and has the gift of making readers see things his way.

It is once again that time to share your interesting, unusual, and otherwise noteworthy reads with other bibliophiles at our annual Show and Tell session.  Anything goes: you can bring treasured tomes and tell us about them, or you can bring odd curiosities you know nothing about and let group members tell you what they think.  Either way, there’s always something to learn and some great books to discuss.  The holidays are great time for great finds and January is the time to show them off!

The tough-mindedness of the social satire and its air of palpable integrity give this novel a special place in Anthony Trollope's Literary career. Trollope paints a picture of the life of 1870s London, the loves of those drawn to the city, and the career of Augustus Melmotte. Trollope’s observations and artistry in The Way We Live Now are an achievement undimmed by the passage of time. In this meeting we discuss chapters 1-50. Book discussion led by Susan Petrone.

Lit Cleveland Writing Workshop
The Heart of the Personal Essay: The Presence of the Author

Saturday, January 30, 2016, 2:00PM
~ every other Saturday, 3 sessions ~
Nonfiction writer Charlotte Morgan will teach the rudiments of the personal essay, allowing plenty of time for in-depth workshopping and critiquing of individual work. According to writer Phillip Lopate, the rhetorical strategy of personal essays is made up of seven elements, including “the presence of the author, an engagement between self and the world." Lopate suggests that the writer must turn herself into a character. The writer-as-character must have complexity and an inner life, which may come from defining the writer’s complexity and quirks. In three sessions, we will read work from The Best American Essays and discuss turning “I” into a character.  Register online.  Stay tuned for more information on Winter FictionFest, an all-day workshop to be held on February 20th.

Thanks for reading,

Harriett
