Salutations,

We are grooving with excitement about things to come here at Loganberry Books.  This Saturday is the first national Independent Bookstore Day (freebies and specially-produced items!), we have lots of book signings lined up this month, and May is when we begin our Thursday evening music programming.  Spring!  Oh, and our staff member Maura launches her new CD at the Beachland Ballroom, too, so everyone’s just a little pumped around here.  Hope to see you for some of the festivities.

New Annual Event

Independent Bookstore Day
Saturday, May 2, 2015, 10:00AM
Over 400 bookstores will be celebrating Independent Bookstore Day across the country. Publishers have provided special limited-edition broadsides, posters, and books to help celebrate -- and May 2 is when we will have some of those items for sale.  We have broadsides featuring Stephen King, Allie Bosch, Margaret Atwood and David McCandless.  We even have tea towels with great bookish quotes.  Free refreshments, balloons, merriment, and a treasure trove of collectible bookish things for sale -- it's a crazy, wild, indie kind of day.

Jennifer Morales: Meet Me Halfway
Sunday, May 3, 2015, 1:00PM
When Johnquell, an African-American teen, suffers a serious accident in the home of his neighbor, Mrs. Czernicki, the neighborhood must find ways to bridge divisions between black and white, gay and straight, old and young. In Meet Me Halfway, Jennifer Morales gives life to multifaceted characters— white teachers and senior citizens, Latino landlords, black and Puerto Rican teens, political activists and Vietnam vets. As their stories unfold, we learn about Johnquell’s family—his grandparents’ history with the Black Panther Party, his sister’s friendship with a white classmate, and his aunt’s crisis of sexual identity. In nine stories, Morales captures a Rust Belt city’s struggle to establish a common ground and a collective vision of the future.

Tom Hayes: Secret of the Warlock's Crypt
Saturday, May 16, 2015, 1:00PM
Cryptic drawings, maps, strange symbols. This is what twelve-year-old Mike Hilliard discovers as he investigates the long-dead, ruthless millionaire Titus Morley. As these strange symbols and drawings hover in his dreams, Mike rambles through the listless Cleveland Heights summer with Billy Hayworth, a photography intern at the Western Reserve Historical Society, where Mike’s uncle, Robert “Otto” Hilliard is an historian. After his death in an 1872 refinery explosion, Titus Morley’s treasure trove of rare grimoires and ancient masks disappeared. Could the drawings and maps provide clues? Mike and Billy are determined to find out. But after rambling through a nearby cemetery at midnight, Mike’s confidence is shaken, Billy is not the same, and a soul-stirring horror has been awakened.

Thomas Zung: Anthology For The New Millennium
Wednesday, May 20, 2015, 7:00PM

~ third Wednesdays ~
This month, Thomas Zung will celebrate the work of Buckminster Fuller, the great American architect, author and inventor. The talk will center around the second edition of Buckminster Fuller: Anthology for the New Millennium. This revised edition, which includes images omitted from the first edition, reflects a culture that has changed with time, much of that change predicted by Fuller. Thomas Zung was a student of Buckminster Fuller and, with Fuller’s Synergetics, Inc., designed the elongated geodesic dome in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1968. He has worked on various geodesic domes, including the Jitterbug sculpture and Fuller’s last invention, the Hang-It-All. Zung is the president of Buckminster Fuller, Sadao & Zung and serves as a board member of the Buckminster Fuller Institute.

Set in North Dakota at a time in the past century when Indian tribes were struggling to keep what little remained of their lands, Tracks is a tale of passion and deep unrest. Over the course of ten crucial years, as tribal land and trust between people erode ceaselessly, men and women are pushed to the brink of their endurance—yet their pride and humor prohibit surrender. The reader will experience shock and pleasure in encountering characters that are compelling and rich in their vigor, clarity, and indomitable vitality.

Lonesome Ranger
Thursday, May 28, 2015, 7:00PM
Lonesome Ranger is a solo music project by Angelisa Crognale. Referred to as Ranger by her closest friends, Angelisa started her musical experience as a singer-songwriter playing open mics and local music venues around Cleveland. Always wanting to play with other musicians, she ventured off into other genres of music experimenting with political folk music and raucous rock and roll. Coming full circle, she has returned to the solo girl and guitar gig with a new identity as a songwriter.

Nancy West: All' Anno Prossimo
Saturday, May 30, 2015, 1:00PM
There is something magical about arriving in a foreign place only to realize one has come home. In a series of emails written to friends over the course of twelve wonderful springs spent in Florence, Italy, Nancy West revels in the beauty, the customs, and the people of Tuscany. Inspired by a lifelong passion for travel, she found a “second home” in Florence in her retirement. West’s witty, conversational, and insightful observations bring the countryside to life for her readers. All’ Anno Prossimo is more than a travel memoir. It’s a love song.

Thanks, and happy reading,

Harriett
