Salutations!

Guess who has a new website?  We’ve been working on it for over a year, and we’re pleased with its sleek, updated style and easy-to-use calendar.  It’s mobile-responsive, too.  We’re just testing it out, do let us know if you encounter any bugs.  Or butterflies.  We’ll be adding browseable catalogs in the weeks to come. Speaking of construction, the Larchmere Streetscape Project is almost finished, and we’re planning a Celebration for November 1st.  Wait ‘til you see the sexy bike racks! Ah, art. That reminds me, it’s the sixth annual Octavofest, a city-wide celebration of books and book arts. It’s American Craft Week as well, with several cool things happening on Larchmere in conjunction with that. Long live art! Long live the book arts!

James Horvath is the author-illustrator of two more picture books starring Duke and his construction crew: Build, Dogs, Build and Dig, Dogs, Dig, which the New York Times said “hops along with the bouncy effervescence of P. D. Eastman’s Go, Dogs, Go!” He has worked as a designer and illustrator for more than fifteen years. In 2002, he established Jamestoons Studios (with a workforce of one) so he could focus more on his illustration. When not scratching and scribbling at his drawing table, he plays with his two young sons and wife, bangs around on the banjo, surfs, and generally has a lot of fun. A lifelong devoted cartoon fan, James Horvath lives with his family on California’s central coast.

Lawrence Waldman: Modern Art in Cleveland
Wednesday, October 15 2014, 7:00PM
~ third Thursdays ~
Cleveland is remarkable for the whole-hearted way in which its artist community embraced Modernism. In 1910, a group of young artists, such as William Zorach and William Sommer, banded together for the purpose of pursuing their ‘radically progressive’ ideas along artistic lines, untrammeled by the limitations of academic art. Larry Waldman, independent art historian, will speak on his new book, Painting in Pure Color: Modern Art in Cleveland before the Armory Show 1908-1913, written with Henry Adams, professor of American Art, Case Western Reserve University.

Performances include Ingenuity Festival, Brite Winter Festival, The New York Songwriter’s Circle at The Bitter End, and opening slots for American Authors, Wild Cub, Gold Motel, Zee Avi, and Eisley. Classics Club

Tobias Wolff: This Boy's Life
Wednesday, October 22 2014, 7:00PM
~ fourth Wednesdays ~
This unforgettable memoir, by one of our most gifted writers, introduces us to the young Toby Wolff, by turns tough and vulnerable, crafty and bumbling, and ultimately winning. Separated by divorce from his father and brother, Toby and his mother are constantly on the move, yet they develop an extraordinarily close, almost telepathic relationship. As Toby fights for identity and self-respect against the unrelenting hostility of a new stepfather, his experiences are at once poignant and comical, and Wolff does a masterful job of re-creating the frustrations and cruelties of adolescence. His various schemes - running away to Alaska, forging checks, and stealing cars - lead eventually to an act of outrageous self-invention that releases him into a new world of possibility.

Looking ahead:  on November 19th (a third Wednesday, ‘cause Thanksgiving, ya know?), Classics Club will meet live with local acclaimed author Thrity Umrigar to discuss her latest novel, The Story Hour.  Come discuss it with Thrity before Oprah monopolizes her time!

Live Music

Bob Sammon

Bob is deeply involved in music on the North Coast whether he's performing in concert halls and taverns, for benefits or in schools.
