Salutations,

Happy Birthday Otis!  Our furry friend just turned six (yes, I know it’s hard to believe).  I’m afraid he slept through most of his birthday, but some customers did come to offer presents.

The Larchmere Streetscape project is now underway.  Traffic is contained to the south side of the street, and there is no on-street parking, but the traffic flow is fine, and you can still pull into our driveway if you need to.  We’re looking forward to the upgrades!

167C: Purple Monster with inflatable (elephant) trunk.

… somehow a brother and sister have to go back in time to rescue their father who got sent back to the dinosaur age.  When they get to the dinosaur age they find this creature that becomes a friend.  It is a 4 legged big bushy purple monster with an elephant trunk.  The monster can inflate his trunk to fly and help solve other problems as the 3 go looking for the kids father?

International Tribute to Design Book Binder Jan Sobota
Wednesday, June 4, 6-8pm
~ first Wednesdays ~
Loganberry Books will exhibit an international tribute to late design book binder Jan Sobota throughout the month of June in the Annex Gallery. The show centers on a hand-made book, Remembering Jan Sobota, written and printed from intaglio prints by Sobota’s friend and colleague Ladislav Hanka. 23 copies of the book are included in the exhibit, each one presented in a unique design binding by a master bookbinder (representing 13 U.S. states and 3 countries). The exhibit also includes other works by Ladislav Hanka, himself a noted bookbinder and artist, who will be in attendance at the opening reception.  Exhibition continues through June 28.

It’s a Wonder That These Exist:  A Brief History of Pop-Up & Movable Books
Wednesday, June 18, 7-8:30pm
~ third Wednesdays ~
Put books into the hands of children, and collectors face a myriad of problems: crayoning, torn pages, and various stains, to name just a few. Make that children’s book a pop-up or movable with delicate and intricate paper engineering and a collector’s troubles are increased exponentially. Make that pop-up or movable a century older (or more) and the chances of finding a collectible copy might seem slim indeed. But that’s part of the fun.  Larry Rakow, the owner of Wonderland Books and himself a pop-up book collector, will present items from his collection of 19th and early 20th century pop-ups for display during the Forum.

Peter Bowles: The Sheltering Sky

Wednesday, June 25, 7pm

~ fourth Wednesdays ~

The Sheltering Sky is a landmark of twentieth-century literature. In this intensely fascinating story, Paul Bowles examines the ways in which Americans' incomprehension of alien cultures leads to the ultimate destruction of those cultures. A story about three American travelers adrift in the cities and deserts of North Africa after World War II, The Sheltering Sky explores the limits of humanity when it touches the unfathomable emptiness and impassive cruelty of the desert.
