Salutations!

October is a busy book month in Cleveland.  This week alone at Loganberry, we have a NOBS Forums on Thursday about Jane Austen, Friday night music with Victor Samalot, and the Cleveland Antiquarian Book Show on Sunday.  We have two book signings next week, and the Altered Octavos Annex Gallery show is still in full swing.  We’re beginning our Holiday hours early this year, mostly because of the Book Show, so we’ll be open on Sundays 12-4pm now until the end of the year.  Octavofest events continue around town, too, including the reception for Art Books Cleveland exhibition in the atrium of the Cleveland Museum of Art, tonight.

NOBS Event

Cleveland Antiquarian Book & Paper Show

Cleveland Skating Club  (2500 Kemper Road)

Sunday, October 20, 10am - 5pm

~ annual event ~

A wide variety of dealers in old, used, and rare books and paper collectibles will set up booths for the one-day Antiquarian Book and Paper Show.  It's like a paper museum where everything is for sale! And you don't have to be a "collector" to take part. From books centuries old, bound in leather or vellum, to modern gems already out-of-print, the Cleveland Antiquarian Book and Paper Show offers a wide variety.  Dealers may specialize in modern first editions of literature, military history, Ohioana, children’s and illustrated books, postcards and ephemera, or beautiful leather-bound sets. There’s a little something for everyone.  Guests of the NOBS Antiquarian Book Fair may also bring along up to three books of their own for a free evaluation a la Antiques Road Show.  General Admission: $5, Student Admission: $3

Carrie Goldman

Bullied: What Every Parent, Teacher, and Kid Needs to Know About Ending the Cycle of Fear

Wednesday, Oct 23, 7pm

~ special event ~

Multiple-award-winning author Carrie Goldman became an unexpected voice for the anti-bullying movement after her blog post about her daughter Katie’s bullying experience went viral and an online community of support generated international attention. In Bullied, Goldman brings together the expertise of leading authorities with the candid accounts of families dealing firsthand with peer victimization to present proven strategies and concrete tools for teaching children how to speak up and carry themselves with confidence; call each other out on cruelty; resolve conflict; cope with teasing, taunting, physical abuse, and cyberbullying; and be smart consumers of technology and media.  Bullied won a National Parenting Publication Award and a Mom’s Choice Award, both at the gold medal level, which is the highest honor offered.

Paula McLain: The Paris Wife

Thursday, October 24, 2013

~ fourth Thursdays ~

Paula McLain’s The Paris Wife, a novel about Hemingway’s first wife Hadley Richardson, has been a bestseller for over two consecutive years.   We’ll discuss McLain’s novel as well as Hemingway’s memoir A Moveable Feast.   Sorry to disappoint, but author Paula McLain will be unable to attend.  But neither will Hemingway, and we’re sure you’ll enjoy the discussion anyway.

Justin Glanville & Alex Barton:  Rust Belt Rising Almanac

Saturday, Oct 26, 2pm

~ special event ~

The Rust Belt Rising Almanac is a collection of snapshots and stories from writers and artists in America’s Rust Belt cities published by The Head & The Hand Press in Philadelphia. In this first volume, you, Courteous Reader, will read about escapes, remains, and models of growth. You’ll green your thumb with an industrial-soil-strength planting guide, find a road map for wandering, and learn about projects that are working (and people who aren’t). Our almanac may not serve as a strictly meteorological or agricultural guide, but we hope it will help to measure the kind of atmospheric pressure felt between jobs, between communities, between the friends who are still here and the ones not so lucky, bound together by a common question: what’s next for the Rust Belt?  Justin Glanville is one of the anthologized authors in the Almanac, as well as the author of the popular self-published New to Cleveland. Alex Barton is a poet who lives here in the Cleveland area.

Annex Gallery

Altered Octavos

Exhibition:  October 3--31

Awards Reception: Thursday, October 31, 6-8pm

~ annual event ~

We hope to start a tradition with our Altered Octavos Contest.  It’s a mixed media art contest with the focus being altered books.  An altered book is a book-object transformed from its original form into a personal work of art.  Open to all artists, this first show has brought objects ranging from paintings, purses, sculptures, and collages that really need to be seen in person.  The juried Best of Show award is $500, with a well-rounded jury:  Cris Rom (Library Director at the Cleveland Institute of Art), Bruce Taylor (staff member of the Morgan Conservatory), Anna Arnold (artist, muralist, and gallery director at Ursuline’s Wasmer Gallery), Cris Tackas (professional bookbinder) and Harriett Logan (owner of Loganberry Books).  There’s also a People’s Choice Award for which all gallery viewers can vote until the end of the month.  Join us for the reception on Halloween to award the winners!

Thanks, and happy reading,

Harriett
