Salutations,

October brings us Octavofest, a city-wide celebration of all things bookish.  Our Annex Gallery hosts a contest of altered books, and we have two NOBS Forums about book collecting, followed by the third annual Cleveland Antiquarian Book Show.  We hope you can join us for one or many of these fabulous events.

Altered Octavos

Exhibition:  October 3--31

Awards Reception: Thursday, October 31, 6-8pm

~ annual event ~

We hope to start a tradition with our Altered Octavos Contest.  It’s a mixed media art contest with the focus being altered books.  An altered book is a book-object transformed from its original form into a personal work of art.  Open to all artists, this first show has brought objects ranging from paintings, purses, sculptures, and collages that really need to be seen in person.  There’s a People’s Choice Award in addition to a juried Best of Show award, and you can add your vote until the end of the month, and join us for the reception on Halloween to award the winners!

Classics Club: a two-fer

Paula McLain: The Paris Wife

Thursday, October 24, 2013

~ fourth Thursdays ~

Chicago, 1920: Hadley Richardson is a quiet twenty-eight-year-old who has all but given up on love and happiness—until she meets Ernest Hemingway. Following a whirlwind courtship and wedding, the pair set sail for Paris, where they become the golden couple in a lively and volatile group—the fabled “Lost Generation”—that includes Gertrude Stein, Ezra Pound, and F. Scott Fitzgerald.

Though deeply in love, the Hemingways are ill prepared for the hard-drinking, fast-living, and free-loving life of Jazz Age Paris. As Ernest struggles to find the voice that will earn him a place in history and pours himself into the novel that will become The Sun Also Rises, Hadley strives to hold on to her sense of self as her roles as wife, friend, and muse become more challenging. Eventually they find themselves facing the ultimate crisis of their marriage—a deception that will lead to the unraveling of everything they’ve fought so hard for loyalty.

Discussed together with

Ernest Hemingway: A Moveable Feast

Published posthumously in 1964, A Moveable Feast remains one of Ernest Hemingway's most beloved works. It is his classic memoir of Paris in the 1920s, filled with irreverent portraits of other expatriate luminaries such as F. Scott Fitzgerald and Gertrude Stein; tender memories of his first wife, Hadley; and insightful recollections of his own early experiments with his craft. It is a literary feast, brilliantly evoking the exuberant mood of Paris after World War I and the youthful spirit, unbridled creativity, and unquenchable enthusiasm that Hemingway himself epitomized.

Book Reviewing In The Kindle Age

Rescheduled to: Thursday, November 21, 7pm

~ third Thursdays ~

Plain Dealer Book Editor Joanna Connors and Critic Karen R. Long, who manages the Anisfield-Wolf Book Awards, will talk about the art and craft of reviewing a book, and how the upheavals in publishing have complicated and diluted the practice. They’ll discuss reviewing, both locally and nationally, and how the  literary conversation splinters and gather online. They’ll talk about their own approach to reviewing and the merits of writing negative reviews versus the merits of writing positive reviews.  Questions from the audience will be welcome throughout the discussion.

Happy reading,

Harriett
