Annex Gallery
Frederick Snowden and Christine Lang:  Reflective Natures
Opening Reception: Thursday, March 1, 6-8pm
~ first Thursdays ~

Both Fred and Christine experience the creative endeavor as a meditative state and use nature as their muse, although the end results can be quite different.  Via a collection of ceramic, pastel and photographic work they invite you to extend the artistic process by reflecting upon your own response.  How does it inform your personal relationship to art and its place in your life?  Does something strike you or take you by surprise? They look forward to learning what you experience as an active participant.  Show continues through March 31.

Live Music
Gene's Jazz Hot
Thursday, March 8, 7-9 p.m.
~ second Thursdays ~
A jazz musician who won a million dollars in the lottery is interviewed by a newspaper reporter. Reporter: Congratulations on winning the lottery. What do you do for a living? Musician: I'm a jazz musician. Reporter: Now that you have a million dollars, what are you going to do with all that money? Musician: I guess I'll carry on working until the money runs out.
I’ve heard that same joke for booksellers, too.  Come join the show, lottery or not, and enjoy the swinging vibe of Gene Epstein, Bill Kenney, Seth Rosen and Reed Simon.  Free homemade cookies will no doubt be served. Donations for the band gratefully accepted.

Wallace Stegner: Angle of Repose
Thursday, March 22, 7pm

~ fourth Thursdays ~

Angle of Repose is a 1972 Pulitzer Prize–winning novel by Wallace Stegner about a wheelchair-using historian, Lyman Ward, who has lost connection with his son and living family and decides to write about his frontier-era grandparents, Oliver and Susan Ward. The novel is directly based on the letters of Mary Hallock Foote, later published as A Victorian Gentlewoman in the Far West. The story details Oliver's struggles on various mining, hydrology, and construction engineering jobs, and Susan's adaptation to a hard frontier life.  In 1998, the Modern Library ranked Angle of Repose #82 on its list of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century.

Coming Soon

Edible Books Festival

Saturday, April 7, 1pm

~ annual event ~

Our ninth annual festival approaches!  It is a creative contest with only one rule: make edible art that has something to do with books.  How people interpret this single rule is wherein lies the fun.  There are four official awards (won by popular vote and awarded appropriate books): the Logan Award for Most Literary, the Strong Award for Most Book-like, the Otis Award for Most Appetizing, and the Zober Award for Most Creative.  As always, the festivities are free, but for the additional pleasure of voting for and eating the edible book creations, a $3 fee helps keep the festival going.  Bring your friends, family, and kids.  Please register your entries, help spread the word (pdf flyer), and visit our website for a complete catalog of past events to get your imagination going.

Book Launch and Author Reading
Loung Ung: Lulu in the Sky
Wednesday, April 18, 7pm
~ special event ~

Join us on April 18th at 7 PM for the official launch of Loung Ung’s newest memoir, LuLu in the Sky.  Writer, activist and a survivor of the Cambodia killing fields, Loung has already fascinated us with First They Killed My Father and Lucky Child. Now she has written a heart-wrenching and inspiring story about her “struggle to keep darkness and depression at bay while she attends college and falls in love with Mark, a Midwestern archetype of American optimism.  Lulu is a story of Loung’s tentative steps into love, activism, and marriage—a journey that takes her back to Cambodia to reconnect with her mother’s spirit and to a vocation that focused on healing the landscape of her birth.”
Preorders of Lulu in the Sky will be offered at 10% off ($14.39).  Reserve a copy today via our Generic Order Form or E-mail.

Hope to see you soon!

peace,

Harriett
